2019 Hyundai Nexo: Hydrogen Powered SUV has 570km Range and Zero Emissions!

By Autoreviewman

Hyundai’s all-new NEXO hydrogen-powered SUV is now available for sale in Canada. And right off the bat, let’s be clear, this is a fully hydrogen power offers up to 570 km of range using no gas. There is no electric vehicle range anxiety and in fact no other hybrid or electric car offering close to this kind of range. And the hydrogen technology means that there are no emissions, apart from pure water vapour!

How the hydrogen technology works is through hydrocarbons passed through a stack of membranes, where it reacts with oxygen, producing electricity and water. The Nexo’s fuel-cell stack energy is parlayed via a 120kWelectric motor and a 1.56 kWh battery rated at combined 160 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque, Final drive is channeled to the front wheels via a single – speed reduction-gear direct drive with a Shift-by-Wire mode selector. The hydrogen is stored in three 52.2-litre tanks, one mounted behind the rear axle, and other two below the rear seats. The tanks have enough capacity to provide 570 km of range and can be filled in less than five to 10 minutes. The only caveat being that as of now there are only two hydrogen fill up stations in Canada – one in downtown Vancouver, BC and one in Quebec City, QC.

The Nexo offers a sleek, but not overly polarizing design. Slit-like LED headlights, and funky futuristic 19 inch wheels are present along with a power sunroof and hidden exterior door pulls which are a nice touch. Inside, the cabin is an intriguing mix of high tech and cool there is roomy acreage in terms of leg, shoulder and headroom.  839 litres of cargo space is available behind the rear seats. Safety includes: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with Pedestrian Detection, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)

On the road, the Nexo is impressive. You can opt for very quick instant acceleration – or switch between normal and eco drive modes.  It all happens in eerie silence, with just a hint road and wind noise as the motors 291 lb-ft of torque burst the Nexo off the line it will cost a hefty $73,000, but is eligible for provincial green car rebates. The future is here and kudos to Hyundai on showing us what if is capable of.
