THE BC Liberals on Tuesday called on Premier John Horgan and the NDP to reconvene the B.C. Legislative Assembly next month to ensure proper accountability and supports for British Columbians as the province continues to face the challenges of COVID-19.

“So far we’ve heard no confirmation from John Horgan and the NDP that they intend to resume the Legislature for October. As our province faces unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s vital that elected officials do their jobs and represent the voices of their constituents in the Legislature during this crisis,” said Jas Johal, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough. “There are people, non-profits, and small businesses in every corner of this province suffering right now and for the NDP to not commit to a fall session would be a slap in the face to every single one of them. British Columbians deserve leadership, action, and accountability from their government.”

The Legislative Assembly is tentatively scheduled to sit for a fall session from October 5 to November 26, but the NDP government has yet to commit to that timeline — or any — for a return of MLAs to the Legislature.

“B.C. has been coping with COVID-19 for six months now, and the NDP has still yet to put forward any plan to remobilize our struggling economy. Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec have all announced economic recovery plans, leaving B.C. as the largest province in the country without one,” said Johal. “Our province is in dire straits and charting a path forward requires input from all parties in the Legislature. It’s time for John Horgan and the NDP to commit to resuming the Legislature next month so we can work to get B.C. back on track. British Columbians deserve nothing less from their elected representatives.”
