Established in 1992, Voice has grown into the largest group of Indo-Canadian publications in Canada. Voice exists to serve the South Asian community in British Columbia and across Canada with accurate, fair, and independent news coverage of local, regional, national, and world events. This Code sets the standards of professional conduct that guide our newsroom’s judgment and reporting.
This Code of Ethics governs all news content produced, edited, and published by Indo-Canadian Voice (“Voice”), across its print and online editions. It applies to all editorial staff, contributors, and freelancers producing news content on Voice’s behalf.
Core Principles
Accuracy. We publish news based on information from reliable, credible sources — including official statements and media releases from organizations such as the RCMP, other police services, and government agencies. We do not conduct independent investigations to verify claims made by these sources, but we attribute information to its source clearly and update or correct our reporting if a source’s account changes.
Fairness and balance. We report all sides of a controversy or dispute fairly. Individuals and organizations who are the subject of critical coverage are given a genuine opportunity to respond before publication.
Independence. Editorial decisions are made free from outside pressure, including from advertisers, sponsors, political parties, community organizations, or any individual or group with a stake in the coverage. Advertising and sponsored content are clearly labelled and kept visually and editorially distinct from news content.
Sourcing and attribution. We identify sources wherever possible. Anonymous sources are used only when necessary to protect a source from harm and only when the information cannot reasonably be obtained on the record; their use is approved by a senior editor.
Original reporting. Voice’s news content is produced on an ongoing basis by its own newsroom and is not primarily aggregated, syndicated, or republished from other outlets without attribution.
Corrections, Conflicts of Interest, and Privacy
Corrections. When Voice publishes inaccurate information, we correct it promptly, clearly, and visibly, both in print (in a designated corrections space) and online (as a note appended to the original article).
Conflicts of interest. Editorial staff disclose to their editor any personal, financial, or organizational relationship that could reasonably be seen to compromise their objectivity on a story. Staff do not report on matters in which they or their immediate family have a direct financial or personal interest without disclosure.
Privacy and harm. We exercise judgment and restraint in reporting on private individuals, victims of crime, and minors, weighing the public interest in publication against the potential harm of disclosure.
Respect for community. As a publication serving the South Asian community, we are committed to accurate and non-stereotyped representation of the communities we cover, while maintaining our independence from any community organization, religious body, or political group.
Adopted by Indo-Canadian Voice, effective 21 September 2026.
