Extra caution urged on BC highways because of snowstorm

A major snowstorm is expected in the southern Interior this weekend.

Officials have closed parts of highways and are urging caution on the mountains.

The worst may be over for the Coquihalla, with a total of 32 centimetres of snow falling and the travel advisory now over.

But the Trans-Canada Highway remains closed from Craigellachie to Revelstoke for a high avalanche hazard, and from Revelstoke to Golden for avalanche control measures.

Highway 3 at Kootenay Pass is also shut down for blasting.

Both those sections are set to re-open later this morning.

Be prepared for lots of fresh snow on the mountains in you’re heading to southeastern BC and southwestern Alberta.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre says the conditions are unstable, so skiers and snowboarders should take plenty of caution in the backcountry.
