POLICE on Monday finally identified the victim shot dead outside Vancouver International Airport on Sunday as Karman Grewal of the United Nations gang.

On Sunday, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced at 5:45 p.m. that it was deploying to the Vancouver International Airport after a man was shot and killed that afternoon near the domestic departure terminal.

Just after the shooting, police had closed all major routes in and out of Richmond for some time to try and intercept the killers’ vehicle.

One witness told the media that two people fired more than a dozen shots outside a terminal.

Two suspects in a black SUV were pursued by an RCMP vehicle that backed off after the suspects fired at it. The RCMP did not return fire because of the busy road. One TV channel showed that a bullet hit the RCMP vehicle, narrowing missing the officer. A burnt-out vehicle was later found in Surrey.

Several videos were in circulation on Sunday. One showed a woman crying over a body at a terminal of the airport. Another showed the black SUV driven by the suspects being chased by the RCMP. And another showed a vehicle on fire in Surrey. (See videos below).

The IHIT spokesperson on Sunday told the media at a press conference at the airport at night that the victim is a 28-year-old man well known to police and that the murder was connected to the Lower Mainland Gang War.

A poster that was already being circulated on social media on Sunday afternoon indicated that the victim of Sunday’s shooting was Karman Grewal. The poster was issued by Surrey RCMP in July 2017 warning the public to stay away from five individuals who had been the targets of shots fired incidents over the previous two months: Karman Singh Grewal, then 25, from Vancouver; Manbir Singh Grewal, then 28, from Coquitlam; Ibrahim Amjed Ibrahim, then 29, from Coquitlam; Indervir Singh Johal, then 23, from Surrey; and Harmeet Singh Sanghera, then 23, from Surrey. Manbir Singh Grewal and Ibrahim Amjed Ibrahim were killed earlier.

In March 2019, Surrey RCMP had announced that they had laid charges against Karman Singh Grewal, then 26, of Vancouver, and another man in relation to three robberies that occurred on February 7 in Surrey and Delta.

Earlier, at 3:17 p.m., TransLink had tweeted: “SkyTrain Canada Line service currently operating between Waterfront Station and Richmond-Brighouse Station only. There is currently no service to Templeton, Sea Island Centre, or YVR-Airport Station due to police incident. Expo Line and Millennium Line remain unaffected.”

About an hour and a half later, Vancouver International Airport tweeted: “We can confirm the situation has been contained at YVR. The airport is open and safe. Flights are operating. We will release more info as it becomes available. Check with your airline on the status of your flight before leaving for YVR.”
