THE BC RCMP said on Thursday that they have notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Surrey where a person sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
On Wednesday, July 8 at approximately 7:22 p.m., officers from the RCMP’s Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) responded to a report that a distraught man had left a residence in the 14100-block of Melrose Drive with an edged weapon. Officers attended the area and conducted patrols to locate the individual.
At approximately 8:02 p.m., the man was located by police near 111A Avenue and Wallace Drive. The ensuing interaction resulted in a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) deployment and shots being fired by police.
The man was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No physical injuries were sustained by responding officers.
The IIO BC has been notified and is attending the scene to investigate police actions in relation to this incident. The surrounding area has been cordoned off to support the investigation.
As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, the BC RCMP said no further information will be released by them.
