NDP ignore their own rent freeze rules, raise rents on subsidized housing: BC Liberals

THE BC Liberals on Tuesday said that while the BC NDP has blocked landlords around B.C. from increasing rents during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have exempted themselves from their own rules and raised rents for those in BC Housing subsidized housing.

“Tenants were upset to learn that the Premier has exempted himself from his own rent freeze legislation and is using it to make them pay increased rents during a pandemic,” said Ben Stewart, BC Liberal Critic for Housing.

“The NDP froze rents as a way of helping British Columbians make ends meet during a challenging year, but now they feel it is fair to raise rents only for those who most need their help. This self-serving decision is a clear double standard and it’s incredibly disappointing to see the NDP choose to put money in their own pockets instead of providing the same relief for their own tenants that they have for the rest of B.C.”
