NDP slams Falcon for saying that removing Port Mann bridge tolls was “short-sighted”

THE NDP pointed out on Friday that in 2017, Premier John Horgan and the party eliminated tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges, saving families up to $1,500 a year.

BC Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon on Radio Red FM on Friday morning called that decision “a short-sighted move.”

The NDP noted:

* It’s the latest in Falcon’s consistent support for bridge tolls. On CKNW on May 18, he said tolling the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges was “the right thing to do.”

* And in October 2020, Falcon wrote: “I’ll concede it was smart politics to remove the tolls if really bad public policy.”

* Just a few weeks ago, Falcon said he would scrap the BC NDP’s toll-free Massey replacement: “if I become leader of the BC Liberal Party… that tunnel is going to get cancelled if we form government.”

NDP MLA Rachna Singh said: “Kevin Falcon is the architect of the unfair BC Liberal tolls that used to cost families thousands of dollars every year. Now he’s continuing to attack the BC NDP’s decision to eliminate those tolls. It’s clear he would toll the Massey replacement and put them back on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges. People can’t afford to go back to the BC Liberals.”
