One dead, two in critical condition in Burnaby collision

BURNABY RCMP are investigating an early morning collision on Sunday that has left one person deceased and two others in critical condition.

On Sunday, February 18 just before 3:45 a.m., Burnaby RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision eastbound on Highway 1 near the Sprott Street off ramp.

It was reported that a vehicle, with four passengers, was travelling eastbound and had pulled over and stopped on the side of the highway near the Sprott Street off ramp. An SUV, also travelling eastbound, then struck the vehicle.

When police arrived, they located one female passenger deceased. Three other female passengers were transported to the hospital, with two of them in critical condition.

The driver of the second vehicle was released from the scene with minor injuries. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

Police have spoken to several witnesses, but are requesting anyone that may have dash cam video of the incident to come forward and speak to investigators.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of everyone involved,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “This is a tragedy that will affect so many.”
