THURSDAY, JUNE 10 UPDATE:
On June 10, Anand Nath, a 20-year-old man from Mississauga, surrendered to Montreal Police. He will be returned to the Region of Peel to answer to the charges of first-degree murder and five counts of attempt murder using a firearm.
Wednesday’s story:
ONTARIO’S Peel Regional Police have arrested and charged two men — Naqash Abbasi, 31, of Brampton and Suliman Raza, 25, of Mississauga — and are searching for a third man — Anand Nath, 20, of Mississauga — in relation to a Mississauga shooting.
On Saturday, May 29, at 7:19 p.m., police received a call for a shooting inside a food establishment at The Collegeway and Glen Erin Drive. The suspect entered the premises and began shooting at the staff, striking the 56-year-old owner, his 44-year-old wife, his two sons aged 22 and 25, and a 58-year-old male employee. The owner’s 13-year-old daughter was also inside the premises, however, she was not physically injured.
Naim Akl, a 25-year-old man from Oakville, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The four others were transported to trauma centers.
As a result of the investigation, members from the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau identified three suspects believed to be responsible for the shooting.
On Tuesday, June 8, Abbasi was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder using firearm.
On Wednesday, June 9, Raza was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder using firearm.
They both were held for bail hearings and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on June 9.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said, “This was a horrific act of violence which resulted in loss of life and serious injury to the surviving victims. These incidents shatter community safety and will be responded to accordingly with a commitment to bring those responsible to justice while protecting the public”.
The third suspect is still outstanding and has been identified as Anand Nath. He is described as male, thin-built with a medium complexion and a shaved head. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest for first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder using firearm. He is believed to be in the City of Montreal.
Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said, “Anand Nath represents a serious community safety risk and we are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts or this incident to call police immediately. This incident reflects the danger posed by his continued presence in the community.”
