Sources told The VOICE the suspect is South Asian.
The male suspect was arrested late Wednesday afternoon at his residence on charges of criminal negligence causing death and fail to remain at the scene of an accident. The suspect is cooperating with police and has been released from custody until a comprehensive disclosure package can be forwarded to Crown Counsel at which time the suspect will be summoned to court.
“Although we are still in the early stages of what will be a lengthy criminal investigation, the arrest of the driver is obviously crucial to its success. We also hope that it helps bring closure to the victim’s family and loved ones,” sais Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet.
Anyone with further information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
ON Tuesday, Surrey RCMP attended the intersection of 96th Avenue and 123A Street, following a report of a collision involving a motorcycle and a car.
The driver kept travelling north on 123A Street for one block before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot. The 16-year-old motorcycle driver from Surrey was transported to hospital but was later pronounced deceased. He was later identified as Kevin Dhillon by his friends who put up a makeshift memorial at the site of the accident and held a candlelight vigil at Holland Park in the evening.
Attempts were made by officers at scene to track the driver utilizing their Police Dog Services but the suspect was not located. Further attempts are being made to try and contact the registered owner of the Honda Accord. Officers are currently attempting to obtain a description of the driver.
“Obviously, the vehicle and documents left behind provides our officers with physical evidence that will be crucial as we commence our investigation,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet on Wednesday. “Once again, by leaving the scene of an accident, a driver has elevated a motor vehicle act investigation to a criminal matter and will have to suffer the consequences of that decision.”
