Despite continuing to draw environmental concerns, we’re now getting a better idea of where a new waste-to-energy project for the Lower Mainland could be built.

Vancouver and Delta, along with two other sites outside Metro Vancouver, are in the running to turn the region’s garbage into power.

The south end of Heather Street in Vancouver and a site near Berg and Ross Roads in Delta are among the locations proposed by companies that are looking to build a new waste-to-energy plant. Nanaimo is also being targeted, as is Squamish Nation land in Port Mellon.

Those are the first of the sites confirmed as possible locations.

Metro Vancouver is also looking at a number of other sites being offered up by land owners but aren’t being made public yet.

The new facility would handle hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste each year, but the project has drawn concerns over pollution in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

Metro Vancouver is hoping to start design and construction in 2016.
