CHIEF Government Whip Mark Holland, MP for Ajax, in a tweet on Saturday, announced: “I confirmed, in writing, earlier this morning to the Speaker of the House of Commons that Raj Grewal, MP for Brampton East, is not a member of the Liberal Caucus.”
It is terribly deplorable that some South Asian MPs over the past two decades have brought much shame on such a vibrant and progressive community such as ours, thus giving racists an excuse to heap their scorn on us.
Grewal’s behaviour will only garner contempt for him rather than the sympathy people were willing to show at first.
He is now shamelessly clinging on to his seat after giving the impression that he had a problem with gambling and was ready to take treatment for it and thus redeem himself. He was to quit his position as MP and leave the Liberal caucus.
But all the sympathetic support that he was getting will now vanish.
He was first exposed by the Conservative Party last week on Wednesday when MP Peter Kent announced: “Yesterday, we learned that Mr. Grewal has, in fact, not resigned as Member of Parliament, despite statements from the PMO and Government House Leader indicating he had.”
He added: “Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives demand the Prime Minister remove Mr. Grewal from the Liberal caucus, and join us in asking for his immediate and official resignation from the House of Commons.”
Kent also bluntly noted: “Today, Canadians learned from media reports that Raj Grewal abused his position on the powerful House of Commons Finance committee by asking self-serving questions about money laundering to senior officials in the RCMP and other law-enforcement agencies. These questions appear to be directly related to his gambling activities, for which he is currently under RCMP investigation. This is in addition to the Ethics Commissioner’s investigation launched earlier this year into his decision to bring his non-Parliamentary employer on Justin Trudeau’s trip to India.”
On Friday, Grewal told the Globe and Mail that “every loan and repayment is transparent and retraceable. … My sins are not ones based in corruption and dishonesty. They are borne out of human frailty.”
And he called announcing his resignation on his Facebook “ill-advised,” adding that he would wait until January to make a permanent decision, and that he is seeking help for his gambling problem, the Globe and Mail reported.
Quite obviously, expecting the opposition parties to go ballistic on this issue, Justin Trudeau finally decided to act to end this embarrassing situation by ordering the chief government whip to kick Grewal out of caucus.
Such shameless, self-serving behaviour by Grewal deserves condemnation.
MEANWHILE, Conservative MPs are keeping quiet about why their former colleague Tony Clement, M.P. for Parry Sound-Muskoka, also refuses to resign as MP after his disgusting sexual behaviour was exposed.
Clement had resigned as the party’s justice critic when a sextortion scandal involving him came to light. He revealed: “Over the last three weeks, I have shared sexually explicit images and a video of myself to someone who I believed was a consenting female recipient. The recipient was, in fact, an individual or party who targeted me for the purpose of financial extortion. The RCMP are currently investigating the matter to determine the identity of the party responsible for the extortion attempt.”
However, the former federal minister had to be kicked out of the Conservative Party when party leader Andrew Scheer found that there was more than one allegation of sexual impropriety against him.
But Clement refused to quit as MP, stating: “I love my job and I love my family. I am committed to getting the professional help I need to continue serving my family, my community and my country in whatever ways I can. I wish to sincerely thank the many members of our community who have reached out to convey their thoughts and prayers to me. I can assure the residents of Parry Sound – Muskoka that my offices remain open and at your service, and that I will continue to uphold the responsibilities of being your Member of Parliament.”
Shamelessness seems to be the way to go for our politicians, eh!
As the Toronto Star put it: “The career explosions of Clement and Grewal this fall are a fascinating look into the lives and temptations of ordinary MPs. A few more and we could have a reality-TV series on Netflix.”
