Fatal single vehicle collision in Abbotsford

ON Monday, July 20 just before 2 a.m., Abbotsford Police patrol officers responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 1 near Cole Road. Officers located a vehicle that had left the roadway and rolled into the centre median.

Two occupants were inside the vehicle and received immediate medical attention at the scene. The driver was airlifted to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Despite the life-saving efforts of first responders, the passenger succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary evidence indicates the vehicle was travelling westbound on Highway 1 when it lost control, rolled, and came to rest in the centre median. Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing factor in the collision.

Highway 1 remains closed in both directions as investigators process the scene. Westbound traffic is closed between No. 3 Road and Whatcom Road, while eastbound traffic is closed between Cole Road and No. 3 Road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

The investigation remains in its early stages and is being led by the Abbotsford Police Department’s patrol section, with assistance from the Abbotsford Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS).

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, observed the vehicle prior to the crash, or may have dash camera footage of the incident to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.
