PREMIER David Eby’s new chief of staff is Andrew Mercier.

Cheryl Oates is concluding her interim appointment as Jim Rutkowski extends his medical leave, the Office of the Premier announced on Monday.

Oates was appointed interim chief of staff in January 2026, with the expectation that Jim Rutkowski would return to the job in August. As Rutkowski continues his treatment, Andrew Mercier has been appointed to fill the role of chief of staff.

Mercier is a lawyer who has deep roots in the labour movement. Mercier served as MLA for Langley from 2020 to 2024, and as parliamentary secretary for skills training, minister of state for workforce development, and minister of state for sustainable forestry innovation. He previously served as the executive director of BC Building Trades.

Eby has thanked Oates for her leadership and service during her term appointment, extended his best wishes to Jim Rutkowski as he continues his treatment and recovery, and welcomed Andrew Mercier as he assumes the role of chief of staff.
