BURNABY RCMP frontline officers caught up with an alleged robbery suspect less than 10 minutes after receiving the report.
At 7:19 a.m. on Friday, July 17, police received a report of a robbery that had just occurred at a business near Lougheed Highway and Sperling Avenue. Several officers from Burnaby RCMP’s “A Watch”, along with support units, responded to the call and flooded the area in search of the suspect.
The victim provided a detailed description of the suspect, who fled the area on foot and then on a bike before police arrival. Thanks to the quick thinking of the victim, police were able to catch up to the suspect just west of Kensington Avenue at 7:28 a.m.
The suspect refused to obey police commands, and a short foot chase ensued. While fleeing, the suspect was taken into custody on a soft pitch of grass beside Lougheed Highway. Police were able to recover all stolen items and the suspect’s kit.
“The quick response and teamwork displayed by our frontline officers was invaluable in the apprehension of this alleged robbery suspect,” said Burnaby RCMP A Watch Cpl. Adam Mills. “A lot of work remains, and we will keep the ball rolling as the investigation continues.”
Police said there are several potential charges in play for this 40-year-old Burnaby man, including, but not limited to the following:
- Robbery
- Uttering threats
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
- Breach of probation
