SURREY RCMP announced on Thursday that Son Thai Lu, 34, of Surrey has been charged with several serious offences after he allegedly shot another man in the Surrey City Centre area just before Christmas.

On December 23, at 8:50 p.m., it is alleged that Lu entered a coffee shop located in the 13500-block of 105th Avenue and shot another man before fleeing the scene. Lu was known to the victim and is also known to police.  The victim received serious injuries and is still recovering.

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit is leading this investigation. With assistance from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEU-BC), Lu was located and arrested on December 27.

Officers continue to investigate the matter and have submitted their preliminary findings to Crown Counsel.  Lu has been formally charged with one count of each of attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and pointing a firearm.

“The shooting appears to have been motivated by a disagreement between the two men,” said Cpl. Scotty Schumann. “There is no known link to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict and we’re thankful no one else was injured.”

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file # 2017-182646.
