VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Vancouver Canucks returned home Tuesday night, October 20, but couldn’t end their losing streak, falling 6-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes at Rogers Arena.
Carolina took the lead twice in the first period, but Linus Karlsson and Jonathan Lekkerimäki responded for Vancouver. Lekkerimäki scored a power-play goal with just 1.1 seconds remaining in the period to tie the game at 2-2. In the second period, Carolina regained the lead through Nicolas Deslauriers, but Max Sasson answered with a shorthanded goal to make it 3-3.
However, the Hurricanes pulled away in the third, scoring three unanswered goals to secure the victory. Deslauriers, Nikolaj Ehlers and Kamloops native Logan Stankoven each scored twice for Carolina, while the Canucks suffered their eighth consecutive loss.
The evening featured an emotional tribute to former Canucks goaltender and longtime broadcaster John “Cheech” Garrett, who passed away earlier this year at age 74. The organization honoured his remarkable connection to the team and the Vancouver hockey community with a pre-game tribute celebrating his playing career, broadcasting legacy and unmistakable personality.

Garrett was beloved for his hockey knowledge, humour and warmth, becoming a fan favourite throughout his years behind the microphone. The tribute also included some fun touches reflecting his personality and love of comfort food, giving fans an opportunity to celebrate the man affectionately known as “Cheech.”

While the result was another tough one for Vancouver, the night’s most meaningful moment came in remembering Garrett and the lasting impact he made on the Canucks organization and hockey fans across British Columbia.
