Gurmej Singh lost his vision at the age of 8. Over time he became a respected traditional musician (keertan) and learned Braille. His professional music career started in 1958 and eventually he performed keertan hymns for many years at the Sri Harmandir Sahib Golden Temple in Amritsar; he has won several awards for his keertan. In 1969, Mr. Singh became the first person to translate the entire Sri Guru Granth Sahib (1439 pages) into Braille, the first copy of which he presented to the Khalsa orphanage where he was raised.
