WITH forecasts predicting heavy precipitation and colder temperatures this winter, the City of Delta says it is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and accessibility of its roadways and pedestrian areas during the upcoming season.
Delta Council on Monday adopted an updated Snow and Ice Control Policy, which introduces an enhanced snow and ice management approach with six priority levels, improving the efficiency of winter road maintenance. The new priority-based system focuses on clearing significant municipal roadways (Priorities 1–3) on a 24/7 basis for as long as poor conditions persist. Local roads (Priorities 4–6) will be cleared during regular business hours, with priority given to higher elevation areas.
“Delta’s proactive approach to winter preparedness prioritizes the safety of our residents and businesses —working to keep our community moving no matter the weather,” said Delta Mayor George V. Harvie. “By investing in our crews and equipment, and implementing an improved 6-priority level system for managing snow and ice, we’re building the capacity necessary to meet the challenges of colder, wetter winters.”
To prepare for the season, Delta has:
- Stocked 2,600 metric tonnes of salt and contracted for an additional 3,000 metric tonnes
- Invested in brine trucks for high-priority routes
- Provided specialized snow and ice driver training for its crews
In addition to the City’s roadways, Delta is prioritizing pedestrian safety by maintaining bus stops, sidewalks near parks and municipal facilities, and pedestrian overpasses on Highway 17A and Nordel Way. Commercial property owners and tenants remain responsible for their frontages, and residents are strongly encouraged to keep their sidewalks and driveways clear of snow.
Major arteries like Highways 99, 17, and 91 fall under provincial jurisdiction and any inquiries about the clearing of these routes should be directed to the Province’s contractor, Mainroad Contracting.
