Collision suspect arrested, charged after Vancouver Police investigation

A 14-month Vancouver Police investigation has resulted in an arrest and criminal charges against the alleged driver in a fatal collision last year in Downtown Vancouver.

One person died and two others sustained serious injuries on June 22, 2023, when the driver of a Plymouth Voyager minivan struck a Honda Accord that was stopped for a light at West Georgia and Burrard Street. A passenger in the Honda died at the scene, and two others in the vehicle were hospitalized.

The driver of the minivan was also taken to hospital.

VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit immediately initiated an investigation into the fatal collision. On August 13, the BC Prosecution Service approved the following charges against Steven Austin Trakalo, 35: criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm (two counts), dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm (two counts).

Trakalo was arrested on September 5 in Chilliwack by VPD officers. He has obtained judicial release.
