Conservative’s Parm Gill loses Ontario riding after vote validation

THERE will now be only 31 South Asians in the House of Commons after Elections Canada’s vote validation in Ontario’s Milton East–Halton Hills South riding that resulted in Liberal candidate Kristina Tesser Derksen winning 32,130 votes as compared to the Conservative candidate  Parm Gill’s 32,101 votes – a 29-vote difference. Preliminary results had given Gill a 298-vote victory.

There is an automatic recount if the difference in votes between the first-place and second-place candidates is within one one-thousandth of the total number of votes received.

A day earlier, in Quebec, the Liberal candidate lost to the Bloc Quebecois candidate in Terrebonne riding in the vote-validation process.

The Liberals now maintain 169 seats, while the Conservatives have 143 seats and the Bloc Quebecois have 23.

The 31 South Asian MPs constitute almost 10 per cent of the House of Commons that has a membership of 343.
