Coquitlam structure fire claims a life

COQUITLAM RCMP are on scene at a structure fire where one individual has been confirmed deceased.

On Tuesday, July 7, shortly after 9 a.m., Coquitlam RCMP attended the 700-block of Roderick Avenue to assist Coquitlam Fire / Rescue Services with traffic control and scene security at a residential structure fire.

Based on information provided by a witness, it was determined one resident was unaccounted for. During firefighting operations, Coquitlam Fire / Rescue Services located a deceased individual inside the residence.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” says Sgt. Adriana O’Malley, Coquitlam RCMP Media Relations Officer.

An 18-year-old was treated at scene and a Coquitlam RCMP officer was transported to a local area hospital for smoke inhalation.

Coquitlam RCMP has assumed conduct of the investigation and is working collaboratively with Coquitlam Fire / Rescue Services and the BC Coroners Service. The identity of the deceased has not yet been determined, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
