ON Monday, July 20 at approximately 2 p.m., the New Westminster Police Department received reports of a single vehicle collision at the intersection of Holmes Street and East Columbia Street. A mid-sized roll-off bin truck was travelling down Holmes Street, but did not stop at the intersection of East Columbia Street. It travelled through the intersection and over the embankment.

“Thankfully, no one was seriously injured from this collision,” said Media Relations Officer Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “The New Westminster Police Department Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit is currently investigating to determine if there was a mechanical problem with the truck or if it was driver error.”

BC Emergency Health Services paramedics transported the driver to hospital with minor injuries. Crews spent several hours removing the vehicle from the embankment. While Holmes Street is not a truck route, trucks are permitted to make deliveries on that street.

The New Westminster Police Department created the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit in 2014. The unit employs two experienced commercial vehicle enforcement officers who work in partnership with other commercial vehicle enforcement teams across the region. In addition to inspecting commercial vehicles to ensure they comply with the Commercial Transport Act and the Motor Vehicle Act, the team enforces truck routes throughout the city.
