THE family of 85-year-old Chang Yong Cho, who was tragically killed by a stray bullet inside his Burnaby home on Sunday, August 30, is making a heartfelt appeal for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
With the support of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Cho’s family has released the following statement as they continue to seek answers about the circumstances that led to his death.
Cho’s two sons, Justin and David Cho, are sharing the following statement on behalf of their family, as they appeal to anyone with information about their father’s death to come forward:
“We are devastated by the tragic loss of our father, Chang Yong Cho. Our father was a man of deep Christian faith, gentle spirit, and unwavering kindness. To lose him in such a shocking way has shattered our hearts.
“Our father lived his life with humility, patience, and love. Born in Korea in 1940, he built a life in Canada grounded in faith, integrity, and service to others. He loved golfing, dancing, sharing meals with friends, and spending time with his family. The greatest joy of his life began when he married our mother, Keum Soon Lee, in 1971. Together, they taught us the values that shaped who we are today: Christian faith, kindness and devotion to family.
“When our mother passed away in 2012 following a courageous battle with Parkson’s disease, our father carried his grief quietly and faithfully. He found comfort in time spent with family, friends, his church and community. We take solace in knowing that he is now reunited with our mother in eternal rest.
“We are struggling to understand how something so senseless could happen to a man who lived with such gentleness and grace. From his sisters, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended family and friends – his loss is being deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
“We are grateful to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and the Burnaby RCMP for their work. We echo their appeal: if you know anything about what happened near 18th Avenue and Humphries Avenue in the early hours of August 30, please come forward. We especially urge the youth identified by investigators, and their parents, to do the right thing. Please turn yourselves in to police.
“We are also grateful to media for sharing our father’s story, but we kindly ask for privacy at this time as we grieve his loss.
“Thank you.”
