Have your say on B.C.’s climate plan

PEOPLE in British Columbia are invited to provide feedback about CleanBC, the Province’s plan to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and increase the use of clean energy.

An independent review of CleanBC’s programs and policies is underway and public input will help inform its findings.

The review is assessing how well CleanBC is working, where improvements could be made and how its programs affect people, communities and the economy.

Feedback can be submitted through a short survey until August 1.

CleanBC includes supports for cleaner transportation, home and building upgrades, and reducing emissions from industry. It aims to help British Columbia transition to a low-carbon economy, while keeping energy affordable and reliable.

The review is being led by independent climate-policy experts Merran Smith and Dan Woynillowicz. The panel will engage with Indigenous people, local governments, environmental non-government organizations, industry, climate experts, the Climate Solutions Council and other interest holders.

In addition to public feedback, interested parties, including affected industry professionals, labour representatives, environmental NGOs and climate experts, are invited to make written submissions to CleanBCReview@gov.bc.ca until 4 p.m. on July 18.

First Nations rights and title holders, Indigenous organizations and local governments are invited to make written submissions to CleanBCReview@gov.bc.ca until 4 p.m. on August 1.

Submission should be a maximum of 2,500 words. All submissions will be read and considered as part of the CleanBC review.

Key dates for the review:

* September 1 – Draft recommendations submitted to government

* October 15 – Final recommendations submitted

* Late fall 2025 Final report released publicly

MEANWHILE, the BC Greens are encouraging British Columbians to make their voices heard as CleanBC reviewers open the door for public input on the review’s framework.

“Collaboration is key here, and the strength of the CleanBC review lies in its independence and diversity of voices,” said BC Greens interim leader Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky. “In our work shaping the Terms of Reference, we emphasized that this review needs to be grounded in science, informed by experts, and centred on Indigenous perspectives—core tenets of any effective climate plan.”

The review is one of many initiatives from the 2025 Cooperation and Responsible Government Accord (CARGA) with the BC NDP.

“The province is failing to meet its 2030 climate goals and we are not on track to hit our 40% emissions reduction target. British Columbians have an opportunity to help shape the process and insist on transparency and accountability on this issue,” said Valeriote. “We want to ensure that key voices, especially those who are steeped in knowledge on climate science and climate action, are included in this review. We are proud to have this review included in our agreement with the government, and now we’re demanding that it be done well.”

The public now has a direct opportunity to speak to the independent reviewers—not politicians—to help shape B.C.’s climate future.

Questions to consider for a written submission:

  • What does an ideal climate solution look like to you?
  • Where do you think B.C. can most effectively cut emissions?
  • How concerned are you about the impacts of climate change in your community?
  • Who should have a say in decisions about how we use the province’s resources and energy?
  • What should the BC government prioritize?
  • How can the government make climate solutions more affordable for individuals or families—through rebates, incentives, or other means?
  • What would better disaster preparedness look like in your region?
  • Where do you think we can lower our emissions—through local food systems, active transportation, cleaner industry, or something else?
  • Is the government doing something on climate that you strongly agree or disagree with? Why?
