ON Sunday, April 19 at approximately 11:56 a.m., West Vancouver Police Department responded to an incident involving an individual in distress at the BC Ferries terminal in Horseshoe Bay.
As the event progressed, WVPD coordinated a response with partner agencies, including the Vancouver Police Department Emergency Response Team, the VPD Marine Unit, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 1, and BC Emergency Health Services.
In order to reduce the risk to public safety and support the emergency response, the BC Ferries terminal was temporarily restricted, and several ferry routes were required to hold.
The individual was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for assessment.
West Vancouver Police thanked the involved partner agencies for their collaboration, and the public for their patience and cooperation during the response.
Vancouver Police said that their Marine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) helped safely resolve the incident.
At 1 p.m. on Sunday, West Vancouver Police requested assistance from Vancouver Police. VPD’s marine unit responded to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal aboard the new vessel, the R.G. McBeath.
VPD officers from the marine unit provided safety on the water while negotiators and ERT officers spoke to the man. After six hours of negotiation, officers took the man into custody on board the ferry.
