Man dead in police-involved shooting in Abbotsford

THE Abbotsford Police Department said on Monday that it has notified BC’s Independent Investigations Office following a police-involved shooting in the 1700-block of Riverside Road on the night of Sunday, December 17.

The male who was shot has since deceased. No police officer was injured.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is now the lead agency investigating the incident.

Police said that this is an unfolding investigation. Riverside Road remained closed between Marshall Road and King Road for many hours.

The IIO BC said that information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that at about 9:55 p.m. on December 17, police responded to a report of a man in distress in the 1600-block of Riverside Road.

There was an interaction between police and the man, and police discharged their firearms.

The man sustained gunshot-related injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident occurred and initial investigative steps will determine the details of the interaction between the man and police, and whether any police use of force was reasonable, necessary, and proportionate in the circumstances.
