Movement to find solutions to the growing challenges faced by local farmers

OVER 100 people came together recently at a second ‘Farmer Town Hall’ to “share their struggles and brainstorm solutions to the growing challenges faced by local farmers.”

In a statement Gagan Singh, local farming advocate, said that there are seven reasons all farmers are struggling:

1. Competition with Cheaper Imports – Local farmers face stiff competition from cheaper imported goods due to lower production costs abroad.
2. Unpredictable Weather and Climate Change – Extreme weather patterns, droughts, and floods are impacting crop yields and stability.
3. Limited Marketing and Sales Reach – Many farmers lack the resources and skills to effectively market their products.
4. Difficulty Accessing Capital and Funding – High upfront costs and limited access to financial support hinder growth and sustainability.
5. Rising Costs – Escalating costs of land, fuel, feed, fertilizer, and labor are squeezing profit margins.
6. Restrictive Government Policies and Regulations – Complex zoning laws, permits, and bureaucracy limit diversification and innovation.
7. Operational Challenges and Inefficiencies – Shortages of skilled labor and farm inefficiencies create operational bottlenecks.

Singh said community leaders are now developing practical solutions that can be implemented today. These solutions are designed to empower farmers, improve profitability, and strengthen the local agricultural industry.

He said the next step is sharing these solutions with the community at the final ‘Farmer Town Hall.’

Everyone is invited to join the conversation, learn about actionable strategies, and be part of the movement to save local farming.
Date: Sunday, March 9
Time: 5 p.m.
Location: 346 Laurier Avenue, Port Coquitlam

Singh said this is an opportunity to come together once again, collaborate, and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future for BC farmers.
