National Gatka Championship returns to Kelowna: September 19–20

NOW in its second year, the Akaal Gatka Cup has grown into a prestigious national championship and stands as the largest Gatka tournament in British Columbia outside of the Lower Mainland.

Hosted by the Akaal Sahai Okanagan Gatka Society—a local non-profit organization founded in 2022 to preserve, teach, and promote traditional Sikh martial arts—the event brings together young athletes (ages 8–17) from across Canada. Competitors engage in fast-paced, dynamic weapon spars using wooden sticks (simulating swords) and leather shields within an open circular ring.

There will be competitors and teams from across BC, Alberta, Ontario, and beyond gathering in the Okanagan.

The event highlights local youth developing discipline, courage, and athletic skill while preserving a 500-year-old martial tradition.
