NDP: “John Rustad’s numbers don’t add up”

THE NDP on Tuesday said that after weeks of promises, BC Conservative Leader John Rustad’s platform contradicts himself and reveals he has no new health spending planned.

“On every important issue, Rustad has been making it up as he goes and has no plan to follow through on his promises,” said Niki Sharma, BC NDP candidate for Vancouver Hastings. “If Rustad’s BC Conservatives form government, they will leave families across British Columbia struggling to get the health care they need while driving up costs for people.”

The NDP pointed out: “Rustad continues to hide his plan for cuts to health care. After claiming for weeks he would make new investments in health care, there is no new health spending in Rustad’s late-to-the-game platform, and Rustad’s proposed spending review will only be revealed after the election and mean cuts to services – just like before.”

It added: “Across the board, Rustad’s numbers don’t support the promises he has been making and there are no new capital dollars for any of the projects he has announced.

“Under John Rustad’s plan, getting a family doctor and the health care your family relies on will become harder, not better,” said Sharma. “John Rustad’s numbers don’t add up. He’s not being honest about his plan to cut health care and bring in two-tier American style privatization, leaving everyday people with fewer doctors and longer wait times.”

She said that David Eby and the NDP have a plan to improve health care, help people with costs, and build homes people can afford. Sharma called on voters to reject Rustad’s costly and harmful policies.

The NDP also said: “To try to hide the fact that the BC Conservatives have no new investment for health care, John Rustad has simply copied the BC NDP’s most recent budgeted planned spending on health, from BC’s First Quarterly Report released on September 10, 2024.

“The $900 million and $500 million “increases” that Rustad is claiming are the already planned increases in baseline health spending.

“‘David Eby’s Action Plan for You’ includes new health care investments, over and above the First Quarterly Report.”
