NDP MP Charlie Angus on Monday said the Trudeau government must take action to break up the Facebook monopoly, institute rigorous oversight and establish credible penalties, including criminal sanctions, for the corporate negligence at Facebook.
Angus said in a statment: “The Facebook papers reveal more about what we already know – that this is a massively powerful corporation that refuses to address the harms that are happening on its platform. And the Liberal government is letting it happen by failing to address the corporate abuses of the tech giants.”
He noted: “Facebook’s algorithms have long pushed extremist content and disinformation. The papers released show their refusal to address serious human rights abuses including promoting violence against minorities, vulnerable people and enabling human slavery.”
