New Westminster Police seek more witnesses in assault near River Market

NEW Westminster Police are asking additional witnesses to come forward after a 9-1-1 caller reported a group of five people beating a man near River Market on the evening of Thursday, October 30.

Police arrived to the pedestrian overpass at the bottom of 8th Street at approximately 9 p.m. and found a man with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police provided aid, before he was transported to local hospital by BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics.

Police were told by people at the scene that the man was intervening when he had observed the group of three men and two women beating someone. Witnesses said that when the man came to the aid of the victim, the group turned on him. The suspects and the additional victim could not be located.

“We understand the other person who was attacked may be shaken and hesitant to come forward,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “We want to hear from you. Your perspective is an important part of this investigation, and we want to make sure you’re safe.”

The investigation is ongoing. Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as they canvas for CCTV footage and interview potential witnesses.

Anyone who witnessed these incidents and hasn’t yet spoken to police about what they saw are asked to contact investigators at 604-525-5411. Additionally, police would be interested in dash cam footage from the area of Columbia Street and 8th Street from between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on October 30.
