ON Saturday, May 30, members of the Nepali community from across British Columbia gathered at a banquet hall in Surrey to celebrate the first ever Nepali Heritage Day event, a vibrant night that showcased the rich cultural traditions and contributions of Nepali Canadians.
The celebration featured authentic Nepali cuisine, traditional music, and captivating cultural performances that highlighted Nepal’s diverse heritage. With over 700 in attendance, community members, families, and guests came together to recognize the achievements and ongoing contributions of the Nepali community while strengthening connections across cultures.
The event was attended by Premier David Eby and MLAs Amna Shah, Jagrup Brar, Garry Begg, and Sunita Dhir, who joined community leaders and residents in celebrating the occasion. A highlight of the event was the formal presentation of British Columbia’s official Nepali Heritage Day proclamation to members of the Nepali community. Eby and the attending MLAs presented the proclamation in recognition of the significant cultural, social, and community contributions that Nepali Canadians have made across the province.
This year’s celebration carried special significance as the Province of British Columbia officially proclaimed May 29, 2026, as Nepali Heritage Day. The proclamation acknowledges the important role Nepali Canadians play in strengthening communities throughout British Columbia and celebrates the rich traditions, values, and heritage they continue to share with future generations.
The date also commemorates a historic achievement in world history, the first successful ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Edmund Hillary. Their accomplishment remains a powerful symbol of courage, determination, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Himalayan people.
The presentation of the proclamation served as a meaningful moment during the celebration, recognizing both the history and ongoing contributions of the Nepali community while reaffirming British Columbia’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism.
Nepali Heritage Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the traditions, language, arts, and achievements of Nepali Canadians while fostering greater understanding and appreciation among all communities.
