Remembering 1984: World Sikh Organization events in June

THE World Sikh Organization is holding events across Canada in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the 1984 Indian Army assault on Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar. This year, they will be sharing video presentations on 1984 and holding a photo exhibit of the tragic assault.

They will be joined by Dr. Colin Gonsalves of the Human Rights Law Network (India) who will speak about the legacy of 1984 and how it has impacted human rights across India.  Dr. Gonsalves is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India and has recently worked on several cased involving the Sikh community such as the cases of 1984 Sikh genocide victims, the lifting of the ban on the film ‘Sadda Haq’ and the appeal of the death penalty of Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar.

June 7: Brampton 

Seminar (free):  Quest for Justice and Peace at Sheridan College, Davis Campus, Brampton, 2:30-5 p.m. Guest speaker:  Dr. Cynthia K. Mahmood (author of Fighting for Faith and Nation – Dialogues With Sikh Militants)

Inter-community dinner, Chandni Convention Centre, beginning at 6 p.m.

 

June 8: Calgary

Inter-community dinner, Khalsa School Calgary, beginning at 6 p.m.

 

June 10: Edmonton

Inter-community dinner, Maharaja Banquet Hall, Millwoods, beginning at 6 p.m.

 

June 13: Surrey

Inter-community Dinner, Punjab Banquet Hall, Surrey beginning at 6 p.m.
