ON Thursday, July 30 at approximately 6 p.m., New Westminster Police Department officers were working in the 800-block of 5th Avenue when they became aware of a nearby apartment fire. As officers approached the building, they could see numerous older adults leaning outside of their windows in an effort to avoid the smoke.

Officers entered the burning building alongside their colleagues from the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service and assisted 15 residents make their way to safety. Several residents were unable to move and required multiple first responders to carry them to safety. Two officers went to hospital for smoke inhalation but have since been released.

“The actions of our officers reflect the very best of policing,” said Media Relations Officer Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “Their quick response and selfless efforts helped these residents escape an incredibly dangerous situation.”

The role of first responders includes taking whatever actions are necessary in the moment to ensure public safety. The New Westminster Police Department are supporting the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service with securing the scene until they complete their work.
