Rustad announces support for involuntary treatment for those suffering from severe addictions

BC Conservative Party Leader John Rustad on Wednesday announced his commitment to involuntary treatment for individuals, especially children, suffering from severe addictions. He emphasized the urgent need to protect vulnerable British Columbians from the devastating effects of addiction, highlighting that the current system has failed not only youth but also adults who are struggling without adequate support.

“People of all ages are being abandoned to their addictions, left to suffer and die while this government hands out drug supplies instead of real help,” said Rustad. “The Conservatives will bring in Compassionate Intervention Legislation to ensure those at risk receive the necessary care, even when they cannot seek it themselves.”

Key Conservative Commitments:

* Compassionate Intervention Legislation: Introducing laws to allow involuntary treatment for those at serious risk due to addiction, including youth and adults, to keep the most vulnerable safe.
* Building Low Secure Units: Creating secure facilities designed for treatment of individuals who pose a risk to themselves or others, ensuring they receive proper care in a safe environment.
* Crisis Response and Stabilization Units: Establishing units to provide targeted care for those experiencing severe addiction or mental health crises, reducing emergency room pressure and providing better outcomes for those in need.
“The BC NDP’s refusal to act has cost lives and left families devastated,” Rustad said. “This is about compassionate intervention versus doing nothing. It’s about protecting those who are at risk of death or serious harm because of their addictions.”

Elenore Sturko, South Surrey MLA, added: “Our government has failed those who need us most. We must take action to ensure that no family is left powerless to help their loved ones.”
