Search ongoing for overdue mountaineers in Garibaldi Provincial Park

SEA to Sky RCMP – Squamish in collaboration with Squamish Search and Rescue, the Integrated Police Dog Services and RCMP Air Services are continuing efforts to locate three mountaineers who were reported overdue on May 31 in Garibaldi Provincial Park.

The RCMP said adverse weather conditions and high avalanche risk have made the search difficult, however, weather models are showing a clearing trend on Wednesday afternoon. It is anticipated this window will permit an aerial scene assessment which is necessary prior to placing search and rescue personnel into this complex terrain.

“We have our highly specialized team members on standby ready to respond. We are working with avalanche technicians who will be assessing the risks as we are facing winter conditions in the area,” said BJ Chute, Manager, Squamish Search and Rescue.

Members of the public are asked to assist by staying out of the Garibaldi Mountain and Atwell Peak area so that search and rescue operations are not hindered.

Updates on the search operation will be provided when available, police said.
