SURREY RCMP on Monday announced a shooting that occurred in Whalley in the afternoon and are asking anyone who sees the suspect vehicle — a Red Kia Optima British Columbia License Plate KE0 43M (that was reported stolen) — to call police immediately.
The alleged suspect vehicle was last seen northbound on City Parkway. Police are asking anyone who sees this vehicle to call 911 right away.
Investigators are actively working to identify the suspects and the intended target of this shooting. A motive has not yet been determined.
On March 28, at approximately 1 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of shots fired in the 10700-block of City Parkway. Surrey frontline officers along with the Uniformed Gang Enforcement Team of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit – British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) attended the area and located evidence consistent with a shooting. Police did not locate anyone with injuries and have no evidence to suggest anyone was struck.
“Police have significant overt and covert officers assigned to target those who bring violence to our streets, often as a result of street-level drug trafficking disputes or interpersonal conflicts between gang members,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Cpl. Vanessa Munn. “Our Surrey Gang Enforcement Team is working closely with CFSEU-BC to target these individuals related to the drug trade and gang violence.”
“Gun violence has impacted every community in the Lower Mainland and criminals who are putting us all at risk due to their actions have no respect for us or city boundaries,” said CFSEU-BC’s Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton. “We are united with the Surrey RCMP and all of our policing partners to do everything we can to disrupt these incidents before they happen and ensure those who are committing these violent acts are held accountable.”
This is the fourth incident of shots fired in six days in Surrey. Indications are the three previous shootings (March 23-25) were targeted. Investigators are examining possible links to the drug trade and Lower Mainland Gang Conflict.
With an uptick of gun violence in the region, police are asking the public to be extra vigilant in reporting suspicious activity to police. This includes any possible drug trafficking, as well as unknown vehicles idling for long periods in the neighborhood.
