THE BC Lions avoided a fourth straight loss in dramatic fashion on Saturday night, clawing out a 21-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. Down two in the final minute, the Lions orchestrated a clutch drive that ended with a walk-off field goal by Sean Whyte to seal the victory.
Quarterback Nathan Rourke led the way with 352 passing yards, completing 22 of 36 attempts with one touchdown and one interception. Justin McInnis continued to shine with 109 receiving yards on six catches, while linebacker Micah Awe anchored the defence with 11 tackles.
The Lions racked up 430 yards of net offence in the win, showing balance and urgency when it mattered most.
Post-game tensions boiled over, and the CFL has since suspended Lions defensive lineman Kemoko Turay for one game for his role in a post-game altercation. Turay, a former second-round NFL Draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts, will miss the team’s next contest.
That next matchup comes against the Edmonton Elks, a team the Lions handled in their season opener with a 31-14 win. Edmonton is coming off its first victory of the season—a 39-33 triumph over Ottawa.
After Sunday’s road tilt in Edmonton, the Lions will return home to Save-On-Foods Field at BC Place for the always-anticipated Watermelon Smash against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. With the upper bowl now open, a strong crowd is expected to pack the stadium for what should be a marquee matchup.
