Steven Mosdell charged with second-degree murder in Coquitlam death

ON August 1 at approximately 6:19 a.m., Coquitlam RCMP responded to a report of an assault with a weapon in the 400-block of Midvale Street in Coquitlam. Police located a man suffering from serious injuries. The man was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Coquitlam RCMP secured the scene, and a suspect was taken into custody. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and worked in collaboration with Lower Mainland Forensic Identification Services (LMD IFIS) and BC Coroners Service.

On August 1, the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) laid a charge of aggravated assault against 59-year-old Steven Mosdell in relation to this investigation.

On August 13, the BCPS upgraded the charge against Mosdell to second-degree murder.

“As part of the investigation, IHIT has determined that the victim and Mr. Mosdell were known to one another,” said IHIT Cpl. Esther Tupper on Wednesday. “We’re asking anyone with information about this incident to please contact IHIT immediately”.

IHIT is seeking witnesses or anyone with dash cameras who were in the area of the 400-block of Midvale Street in Coquitlam between 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Police said that as this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.
