Surrey honours veterans with Remembrance Day ceremonies citywide

TO mark Remembrance Day, several events will take place across Surrey on Tuesday, November 11 to honour the service, courage and sacrifice of Canada’s veterans.

“Remembrance Day is an opportunity for us to come together and reflect on the steadfast dedication of Canada’s veterans and those who continue to serve,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke on Wednesday. “Their legacy lives on in the freedoms we enjoy and the communities we build. I encourage everyone to take a moment during Veterans Week and on Remembrance Day to reflect and express appreciation for the commitment and courage of our veterans and service members.”

Services will be held at:

  • Veterans Square (17710 56A Avenue) –The procession to Veterans Square begins at 10 a.m., with the service at the Cenotaph starting at 10:25 a.m.
  • Whalley Legion (10626 City Parkway) – The procession from the Legion begins at 10 a.m. with the service starting at 10:25 a.m.
  • Crescent Legion (2643 128 Street) – The procession begins at 10 a.m. with the service starting at 10:25 a.m.
  • Port Kells Community Hall (18918 88 Avenue) – The service starts at 10:30 a.m.
  • Newton Senior Centre (13775 70 Avenue) – The service starts at 10:30 a.m.
  • Surrey Centre Cemetery (16670 60 Avenue) – The service starts at 10:45 a.m.

Residents are encouraged to arrive early to find parking or consider alternative forms of transportation, such as biking or taking transit.

The largest Remembrance Day ceremony in the city is expected to take place at Veterans Square in Cloverdale, presented by the Royal Canadian Legion Cloverdale Branch. The event will be livestreamed from the City of Surrey Facebook page. Meanwhile, the Museum of Surrey (17710 56A Avenue) will be open to the public until 1 p.m.

At Surrey Centre Cemetery, visitors are welcome to place a carnation at a veteran’s memorial site from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For those wishing to locate a veteran or loved one interred at a City-operated cemetery, the City is offering a new searchable online map.
