THE Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit (PCU) investigation has resulted in a suspect being charged with nine counts of break-and-enter following a five-day spree in November 2023.
Between November 8 and 12, 2023, Richmond RCMP investigated nine alleged break-and-enters to apartment buildings in the city centre. Through the course of the investigation, a suspect was identified.
Reman Marcos Abayon has since been charged with nine counts of break-and-enter and one count of mischief.
“Property crime disrupts our community’s sense of safety,” said Cpl. Ryan Lee, Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit. “Our team is dedicated to pursuing offenders and working to hold them accountable.”
AS winter holidays approach, Richmond RCMP say they recognize many people will be making plans to travel. As part of the planning process, they recommend including a safety checklist for your residence:
- Do not put your vacation plans on social networks like Facebook. It is easy to gain access to personal information once it’s entered onto Facebook or another social network.
- While on vacation, arrange for someone to shovel/mow the lawn and park in your driveway. It’s ideal to have someone you trust house-sit for you so your home is still lived in while you are away. If this is not possible, make sure your home looks lived in.
- Do not keep ladders or tools on the outside of your home. If it can be used to get into your home, keep it locked up and out of sight.
- Don’t leave mail in a mailbox. If you are away have someone collect your mail for you. Unattended mail is a treasure trove of personal information for potential thieves.
- Plan ahead. If you’ll be away, let Canada Post hold your mail until you return.
