U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he will go ahead with tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports.
He was responding to a question by a reporter at a news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House.
Trump said: “We are on time with the tariffs and it seems like that is moving along very rapidly.”
He added: “We have been mistreated very badly by many countries, not just Canada and Mexico. We have been taken advantage of.”
He said: “The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule.”
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly told reporters in London, England, that Canada needs “to stand strong and send a clear message that Canadians will fight back.”
She said: “The threat of tariffs is a real one and may continue for a while. We need to be able to deal with the unpredictability of President Trump.”
