NEW Westminster Police Department officers received a call for service on September 11 to a residence in the uptown neighbourhood for an unrelated matter. During the course of their duties, officers located a number of suspicious items believed to be connected to identity fraud. Patrol officers worked in partnership with the Crime Reduction Unit and a search warrant was obtained and numerous items related to fraud were seized from the residence.

Seized items include: approximately 8,000 pieces of stolen mail, a firearm with ammunition, three imitation firearms, approximately 1,500 stolen or fraudulent bank cards and identification cards, approximately 50 passports, and items that could be used to produce fraudulent documents.

This investigation is ongoing. Officers are working to process thousands of pieces of evidence and identify the rightful owners of the stolen property. Officers are considering a number of charges related to firearms offences, mail theft, identity theft, and credit card fraud.

“Offenses like these negatively affect the entire community,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “Credit card fraud and identify theft is an invasive crime that can create significant problems for both businesses and individuals. We encourage residents to periodically check their bank and credit card statements and report any irregularities. The diligent work of our Crime Reduction Unit will likely prevent further residents becoming victimized.”
