Trump imposes 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday did what he had said on Sunday he would do: impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States — with no exceptions or exemptions.

Trump asserted: “Our nation requires steel and aluminium to be made in America, not in foreign lands.” He claimed that “ultimately it will be cheaper” for American consumers.

According to CNN, Chinese steel enters the U.S. secondhand. “Some is purchased by foreign countries and reshipped to the US. And some of it is mislabeled and resold through various channels.”

FRANÇOIS-PHILIPPE Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, said: “Steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, the United States’ closest ally, would be totally unjustified.

“Canadian steel and aluminum support key industries in the U.S. from defence, shipbuilding, energy to automotive. This is making North America more competitive and secure.

“We are consulting with our international partners as we examine the details. Our response will be clear and calibrated.

“We will continue to stand up for Canada, support our workers, and defend our industries as we have always done and always will.

LIBERAL leadership hopeful Mark Carney said in a statement on X: “Trump wants us to lose our cool. But we need to stay united, with the right response.”

He added: “In the short term, Canada needs to manage foreign trade threats with dollar-for-dollar tariffs and supports for our critical steel and aluminum workers. And as we look to the future, we’ll need a coordinated strategy to boost investment, make our companies more competitive, and diversify our trading partners.”
