ABBOTSFORD Police said on Tuesday that they have been able to speak to the 88-year-old turbaned Sikh victim of an unprovoked assault last Friday who told them that “the person that was near him spoke English and believes he was purposely shoved as there was no one else around him.” 

Police said they responded to a report of an assault on Friday, November 6 at 10:43 a.m. in the 32071-block of South Fraser Way.  The victim was walking on the sidewalk at the intersection of South Fraser Way at Cedar Park Place when he was shoved and fell to the ground.

Sgt. Judy Bird said that there are conflicting descriptions of the person who may have shoved the victim and therefore, police cannot provide a suspect description. 

She added: “There is no indication at this time that this was racially motivated. The Abbotsford Police send our wishes for a speedy recovery to this gentleman.”

His grandson told the media last weekend that the victim had just got off the bus on Friday at Clearbrook Road and South Fraser Way and was walking to Cedar Park when the attack took place.
The victim was unable to get back up and lay there for some 15 minutes before a Punjabi-speaking man found him and asked him what had happened.
The senior’s grandson told the media that police have some surveillance footage from a nearby bank that could help in identifying the attacker.
The grandson said that his grandfather who had to undergo surgery might no longer be able to go around on his own as the doctors say that it will take many months to recover and would need a cane to walk. He may have chronic hip pain from now on.
The grandson wanted others to know about the attack so that they could be alert.
