GoFundMe set up for Maan raises more than $41,000
THE Correctional Service of Canada on Friday identified those who were killed on Thursday in a rural Alberta crash as Correctional Officers Nicolae Serban and Ramandeep Kaur Maan of Edmonton Institution for Women and inmate Kiara Mooswa.
A member of the South Asian community told the media that Maan, 25, had come to Canada as an international student. She moved to Alberta after completing her studies in Manitoba.
Police say that a box truck collided with a Correctional Service Canada minivan that was transferring an inmate at an intersection about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. All three in the van died at the scene. The driver of the box truck sustained minor injuries.
The Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Correctional Officers Nicolae Serban and Ramandeep Kaur Maan of Edmonton Institution for Women, who tragically lost their lives yesterday while carrying out their duties in service to Canada. Their commitment to public safety, professionalism, and dedication to their work exemplified the values of the Correctional Service of Canada.
“Today, our thoughts are with Nick and Ramandeep’s families, friends, and colleagues, who are facing an unimaginable loss. We honour them not only as Correctional Officers, but as valued members of our CSC family whose lives, service, and contributions have made a lasting impact on those who knew and worked alongside them.
“This tragedy has affected many families and communities. We also mourn the loss of Kiara Mooswa, who was in our care and custody at the time of the accident, and extend our condolences to her family, friends, and community.”

MEANWHILE, Maan’s brother Kamalpreet Singh Maan has organized a GoFundMe to support their family. It had raised more than $18,500 of its goal of $40,000 by Saturday night and more than $36,000 by Sunday afternoon. On Monday, Kamalpreet announced: “We have received enough support to help our family get through the initial expenses, so we will now be closing the fundraiser.” He thanked everyone who had helped raise the money.

He wrote: “Ramandeep was only 25 years old. Born and raised in Gudhe village, Ludhiana, Punjab, she came to Canada as an international student with big dreams, a strong work ethic, and a determination to build a better future. Through years of hard work and sacrifice, she completed her education, established herself in Alberta, and recently began her career as a Correctional Officer with the Correctional Service of Canada.”
Kamalpreet said: “To the public, she was a correctional officer. To us, she was so much more.
“She was a loving daughter who spoke to our parents every day, a caring sister who always put family first, and a loyal friend who touched countless lives with her kindness, humility, and beautiful spirit. Ramandeep was the pride of our family and an inspiration to many young people who leave their homes in pursuit of education and opportunity abroad.
“The sudden loss of Ramandeep has left our family devastated emotionally and financially. We are now facing unexpected expenses related to funeral and memorial arrangements, family travel, and other costs associated with this unimaginable tragedy.
“On behalf of my family, I am humbly asking for your support during this difficult time. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease the financial burden and allow us to focus on honoring Ramandeep’s memory.
