KHALSA Diwan Society Vancouver invites the community to join in the grand Vaisakhi celebrations on Saturday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan is an annual parade that has been celebrated in Vancouver since 1979. There is free food for everyone and joyous celebration.
Vaisakhi – one of the most significant festivals in Sikhism and a joyous occasion in Punjab – is celebrated every year in April. It marks both a harvest festival and the historic creation of the Khalsa.
The Khalsa Diwan Society is a pioneer Sikh society and was formally established in 1906. In 1908, the Society built the first Sikh Gurdwara at 1866 West 2nd Avenue in Vancouver. This Gurdwara served the community until 1970, when the new Ross Street (now Khalsa Diwan Road) location was opened.
The Society has played a major role in the social and economic development of Canadian society, raising Sikhi- and humanitarian-related issues and getting recognition for Sikhs in Canada.
On April 13, 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru, established the Khalsa Panth at Anandpur Sahib. He introduced the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones) and initiated them with Amrit Sanchar, forming a devoted Sikh brotherhood committed to justice, equality and selfless service. Vaisakhi is a day of deep spiritual significance, reminding Sikhs of their values and responsibilities.
