ON August 24, 2022, Surrey RCMP and British Columbia Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) responded to a residence at 188 Street and 76 Avenue in Surrey.  First responders located 47-year-old Frank James with life-threatening injuries.

Despite life-saving measures by BCEHS, James did not survive. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation.

On May 23, 2025, 42-year-old Nelson Adam Short was arrested in Burnaby for his alleged involvement in the murder of James. On May 24, a charge of second-degree murder was laid by the BC Prosecution Service.

He made a brief appearance in court on May 24 and was detained by a judicial justice. His next appearance is on May 29.

IHIT said it continues to investigate and is working in partnership with the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU), Surrey Police Service (SPS), and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS).

Although an arrest has been made, investigators believe there were others involved. Homicide investigators are looking to speak to additional witnesses who may have information on what happened to James.

As this matter is now before the courts, no additional information will be released, IHIT said.

If anyone has any information regarding the death of James they are being asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448 (IHIT) or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
